Welcome
to the webpage for Sociology 246: Sociology of Religion.
This will be the major point of written contact between me, the
teaching assistant, and students in the class. In addition to
gaining access to the schedule of topics and details about course
assignments (which are also available in the syllabus distributed on
the first day of class), you should use this page to access the
course blog, student summaries of the course readings, and details
about course town meetings. Please revisit the page often for
additional information or reminders of pending assignment deadlines.
As
the course catalog suggests, we will spend the semester learning
about the nature, structure, and function of religion globally and,
more specifically, in the American context. After exploring
the perspectives of some of the classical theorists (Durkheim,
Weber, Dubois, and Berger), we'll look at religion in two ways: how
does religion function as a society and how does religion function
within society.
