I am a Professor of Sociology at the University of California, San Diego.  My research primarily contributes to two sub-disciplines: sociology of (higher) education and sociology of religion. Within these broad fields of inquiry, my work tends to focus on social identity, professions, gender and sexuality, and race.

A (sociological) social psychologist by training, my main focus is on the social construction and maintenance of social identity, particularly the intersection of social group identities (gender, race, sexuality) and religious, academic, and professional identities.
